Web Rumor Suicides: No Longer Just Affecting Kids
Its rare that a bit of news both surprises and shocks me, but this did. Evidently South Korea has one of the most active online communities, and, like one of my ex-girlfriends, they like to spend a fair majority of their time wallowing in the rumor mill and generally making people's lives a living hell. Unfortunately, this has led to many suicides. The article states that North Korea has one of the highest suicide rates in the world, whether there is a correlation to the online haranguing, they fail to say, but it certainly doesn't help.
The Internet claimed its latest victim yesterday, 39 year old Korean actress Choi Jin-sil, who hung herself over rampant rumors that she was responsible for the death of a friend, who had committed suicide earlier in the year. The rumors stated that she had lent cash strapped actor money, and that she was so relentless in her attempts to get it back, that it drove him to "gas himself."
Its very sad to me that people can be driven to this brink by the anonymous masses.
Please, if you feel like you might be near that brink, call 1-800-273-TALK (8255).
