Antipsychotic drugs used in Nursing Homes called "A form of elder abuse" by patient advocates
So I came across this story in my twitter feed search. And I have to say I tend to agree. Its a balancing act between having the anti-psychotic drug available for the patients who need it, and not overprescribing it to simply stop the complaining. Every client I've had in a nursing home abuse case claimed that their otherwise lucid parent or spouse was rendered out of it according to these drugs. Am I saying that they should be banned, or that they should only be independently prescribed (as opposed to in-house docs)? No. I am saying their needs to be greater monitoring though. Whether this is done by resident councils or by DSHS is another story. I just know there needs to be something in place, because this appears to be out of control.
